oliver valvetek manufactures a range of 'small bore' subsea ball valves, from 0.38" [10mm] bore to 0.75" [20mm] bore. these ball valves typically have an operating pressure rating up to 10,000psi [1034bar] for floating ball valves, and 15,000 psi for trunnion mounted ball valves. these valves have an operating temperature range of 0f[-18c] to 250f[ 121c] and typical water depth rating of 10,000ft [3050m].
overview
subsea ball valves provide the user with a soft seating quarter turn isolation solution for many different applications. the inline flow path of ball valves minimises flow losses, important on extended hydraulic control lines. commonly used to isolate hydraulic and chemical fluids associated with subsea oil and gas production systems.
in addition to the normal 2-way isolation type ball valve, oliver valveteks' range of small bore ball valves can be provided in 3-way or 4-way configurations for diverting applications and in a range of different materials.
the ball valves typically have low operational torques, but high torques to damage. the added benefit of these products is if the valves are over-torqued and shear the end stops, they will continue to rotate without damaging the internals.
the small bore subsea ball valves are qualified at different pressure ratings up to 1,038bar (15,000psi) and are suitable for water depths to 3,050m (10,000ft). qualification testing is performed to the exacting standard.

types of ball valve
1/2" two-way floating ball type subsea valve
this valve design utilises the simple floating ball arrangement which provides for a low cost compact 10,000psi (690bar) ball valve suitable for subsea applications.
the design has a single end connector which minimises possible leak paths. the valve is commonly supplied with a simple lever handle for divers to operate.
3/8" two-way trunnion ball type subsea valve
this valve design utilises a trunnion mounted ball arrangement which is suitable for operating pressures upto 15,000psi (1034bar).
the figure shows the valve with 1/2" npt connections, panel mounting holes and a square drive.
the square drive is often fitted to a paddle or tee bar for rov operation.
3/8" three-way trunnion ball type subsea valve
the 3/8" two-way valve can be fitted with an alternative ball design and bottom end connector making it so that fluid entering the bottom connection can be diverted to either of the two side end connections.
having double piston effect seats means that whilst flowing from the bottom connection to one of the side connections, the other side connection is fully isolated.
1/2" two-way trunnion ball type subsea valve
much like its 3/8" bore sister product the 1/2" bore trunnion mounted ball arrangement is also suitable for operating pressures up to 15,000psi (1034bar).
the figure shows a double sealing arrangement of the product. the double sealing valve utilises a spring energised gland seal in series with the normal o-ring spindle seal.
1/2" two-way trunnion ball type with bolt on connections
the 1/2" ball valve can be supplied with bolt on end connections rather than the threaded type.
the bolt on connections allow tubes to be welded below the valve rather than inline.
this enables the distribution unit designer to fit a greater density of valves on their rov panel.
product features
operator
the ball valves can be supplied with a number of different operators including lever and tee bars for diver operation or paddles for rov operation.
stop pins
each size of ball valve has a stop pin designed for maximum torsional (torque to damage) strength.
anti-blowout spindle
all ball valves have an anti-blowout safety feature.
environmental seals
all ball valves have seals to prevent the ingress of seawater. these have been tested to water depths equivalent to 10,000 feet (3050m).
gland seals
the gland seal within each ball valve is a peek thrust ring with a secondary o-ring with a special anti-extrusion ring designed to prove a leak free spindle sealing with no requirement for adjustment.
ball
the oliver subsea ball valve range includes both floating ball and trunnion mounted ball designs. all balls are highly polished to provide minimum operational torques.
seats
all ball valves utilise peek seats which offer wide process compatibility whilst maintaining a positive sealing across the full pressure range from low to high pressure.
full flow
positive 90deg travel combined with clear through bore provides minimum restriction to flow.
3 or 4 way
the trunnion mounted ball valves can be provided as 3 way or 4 way designs.
traceability of materials
all the components within an oliver subsea ball valve have material traceability. the complete ball valves are individually serialised and are provided with material and pressure test certificates to bs en 10204 3.1 as standard, 3.2 optional.
